The renovation of the historic House – which lies on property owned by the State of New Jersey and is overseen by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and the Delaware and Raritan Canal Commission – will include considerable structural improvements and extensive exterior and interior upgrades, according to Michael Sommer, Senior Vice President of the Westfield, N.J.-based Premier Development, which is investing significant capital to fund the restoration project.
Estimated to be completed in three-to-four-months, the reconstruction is now underway after several years of careful planning, designing and permitting.
Once completed, the house – originally used as a home for those whose job it was to open the swing bridge when canal boats came through – is expected to be available for public viewing with the possibility of future office space, serving as yet another historical marker along the Delaware-Raritan Canal and towpath which are part of the National Recreational Trail System.
“We’re pleased to have the opportunity to restore the East Millstone Bridge Tender’s House, a reminder of days gone by that has unfortunately fallen into disarray with broken windows, collapsing chimneys and graffiti after years of neglect.” Mr. Sommer says.
“Countless hours of diligent planning and working closely with the Town, Delaware-Raritan Canal Commission and New Jersey state officials have culminated in the exciting start of this renovation project and we look forward to bringing an important glimpse into the history of the Delaware-Raritan Canal to reality.”
